Kenya is among three African countries (including DRC) set to benefit from an $11.7 million U.S. government fund, seeking to improve compliance with international labour standards in key export sectors ahead of a new trade deal with Washington.
The U.S. Department’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) says the grant will support efforts to improve compliance with relevant international labour standards and acceptable conditions of work, with emphasis on promoting occupational safety and health in one or more export-oriented economic sectors, such as the mining and quarrying sector.
The Kenya-US Free Trade Agreement negotiations officially began on 13th July 2020. The agreement is set to be the first of its kind between the U.S. & a Sub-Saharan African Country & seeks to replace AGOA which expires in 2025. AGOA allows sub-Saharan African countries to export thousands of products to the U.S. without tariffs or quotas.
