“In terms of symptoms, it was a normal virus for me. I had three or four days which were a little bit difficult, with a bit of a temperature and a dry cough, and some discomfort in my chest. That was it.” This is how Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta recounts his ordeal in the hands of the pandemic, COVID-19.

Mike Arteta was diagnosed with coronavirus on the 13th of March, 2020 few days after the team were by Olympiacos Football Club of Greece, after being exposed to the owner of the team who also tested positive to the virus a couple of days earlier.

The Spaniard declared himself ‘completely recovered’ while sharing his experience of self-isolation and managing the disease with the club’s official website Arsenal.com.

He starts to feel the symptoms of the disease immediately after he was informed that he might have been exposed to the infection after the owner of Olympiacos was tested positive. Arsenal just had a with Olympiacos FC in the found of 32 eliminators of the Europa cup.

“Then you realise: ‘Wow, everybody can be exposed here, this is very serious’ and you start to think about the people that you’ve been in contact with and the other people that can be related to us. That’s when a bit of fear comes. ” Arteta told the club official website.

He quickly called the club’s hierarchy and others that matters, to inform them about the fact that the players might be exposed too, a situation he called the massive risk to go ahead with the match against Manchester city in the English Premier League, so the team have to The Premier League to inform them about the critical situations at the club and the Premier League is left with no choice than to postpone the match against Manchester City.

The journey into isolation begins for him after the league was suspended as over 14 players went into self-isolation. He shares the difficult moment when his nanny and missus also tested positive and a form of relief for him was when none of the kids tested positive.

“The difficulty is that I have people at home, three kids as well and I was worried. My missus has been through it and my nanny’s been through it. Thank God, the kids never got it. We are all completely fine now.” Said an elated Arteta said.

More than 500,000 people worldwide have been infected and there have been over 23,500 deaths since the outbreak began.
